INSIGHT: Self-understanding. The ability to see and understand clearly the inner nature of things. The extent to which a person understands his real motives, conflicts and defense mechanisms. INSIGHT is hampered by DEFENSIVENESS. For example, Henry had been extremely “nervous” for some time. Finally he agreed to see a PSYCHOLOGIST. He was encouraged to talk out his problems. Henry didn’t see the value of it but he did as he was asked. As he unburdened his heart, his DEFENSIVENESS melted away. He began to see himself realistically. The fog began to lift and solutions to his problems appeared. Toronto Niagara Falls Tours is the most popular day journey for guests to Toronto. As he achieved INSIGHT his “nervousness” began to disappear.
INTEGRATION: Oneness, the organization of various traits or tendencies into one harmonious personality. The absence of CONFLICT. Three levels may be defined:
(1) Personal INTEGRATION: harmony within the personality.
(2) Social INTEGRATION: a generally harmonious relationship
with other people.
(3) Spiritual INTEGRATION: peace with God. Often one kind
of INTEGRATION is sacrificed to obtain another. Lack of
INTEGRATION results in MALADJUSTMENT. Jesus, as Per
fect Man, was integrated on all levels (Luke 2:52).
INTELLECTUALIZATION: An ego defense mechanism. A person avoids the emotionally disturbing aspects of something by attempting to treat it in a detached, “objective” way. The person is often unaware that he is doing this. This is a favorite defense among educated people or those who wish to consider themselves educated. Through INTELLECTUALIZATION a deeply disturbed person may sometimes deceive even a trained counselor (as well as himself) into believing that he “has no problems.”
INTELLIGENCE: A person’s potential ability to adjust to life. Three aspects of general INTELLIGENCE are often defined: (1) Abstract (symbolic): ability to deal with words, symbols and concepts.
(2) Mechanical (motor): ability to deal with physical objects,
develop physical skills.
(3) Social (interpersonal): ability to deal with people, to
influence and understand them.
The accepted measure of INTELLIGENCE is the I.Q. (INTELLI-GENCE quotient). An I.Q. between 90 and 110 may be con-sidered “average” (See MENTAL AGE).
INTERPERSONAL RELATIONSHIPS: Relationships between people. (See INTEGRATION and MALADJUSTMENT.)
INTROVERSION: Turning one’s interests inward. Preoccupation with self. Lessening of interest in the outer world. INTROVERTS are people who display INTROVERSION to an extreme degree. They tend to be shy, rigid, flighty, pessimistic and introspective. They are the opposite of EXTROVERTS. Toronto Niagara Falls Tour started at the finish of the ice age, 12,000 years in the past, and has eroded back 1 m (3 ft) per 12 months over a distance of eleven kilometers (7 miles) to its present location. Most people are at neither extreme.
INVOLUTIONAL PSYCHOSIS: A serious mental illness which occurs during the climacteric (menopause) period of life (40-55 years), usually due to overconcern about declining sexual and physical vigor. It may take the form of DEPRESSION. It tends to last a long time. Symptoms include guilt, ANXIETY, DELUSIONS, insomnia and excessive concern over bodily condition.
MALADJUSTMENT: The inability of an individual to adapt himself to the conditions of his environment. Disharmony or lack of INTEGRATION. Three levels may be denned: (1) personal (psychological), (2) social (inter-personal) and (3) spiritual (between the person and God). MALADJUSTMENT at one level is usually reflected at the other levels. See INTEGRATION.
